The Story behind Masaya Danes
Masaya Danes was founded in 2004 by Camille Hutchinson and Brandi Williams. Camille and Brandi have been friends since they met in high school in 1993. Since then they have trained together in obedience, agility, pet therapy, and now conformation.
In 2001, Brandi received her B.S with a major in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas. She now lives in Louisville, KY with her two Dobermans (Schultz and Madison) along with her Great Dane (Lily).
In 2004, Camille received her M.S. in Geology from the University of Arkansas. She is currently living in Birmingham, AL with her Great Dane, Ajax.
During the spring of 2003 both Brandi and Camille decided they were interested in conformation.
Camille had already developed a lasting love for the Great Dane. In January of 2003, Camille lost her beloved Dane, Zeus, to cardiomyopothy and other problems associated with poor breeding practices. It was seeing her beloved companion die at such a young age (4yrs) that made Camille (and Brandi) determined to choose her next puppy from a reputable breeder.
Brandi has been owned by Dobermans for over 6 years. After dealing with Madison (aka Mad Maddy the Matador ) for the last 4 years, she decided that for her next child she wanted something different. She had admired many of the personality traits exhibited by Zeus, so she decided to do more research on Danes. The more she learned the more her admiration for the breed grew.
In January 2004, Brandi purchased Droghedas TigerLily v Masaya on co-ownership from Drogheda Great Danes (Thank you Julia for all your help).
In February 2004, Rockingdanes the Patriot made the long trip from Canada to Arkansas on a co-ownership with Sonia Bernett (via Houston where he got to spend time during his layover with his auntie Brandi!). (Thank you Sonia for your trust!)
At that point they decided that they needed a name......
During the fall of 1999 Camille and Brandi decided that they wanted to go on a trip outside the country. Since they both had greatly enjoyed their high school Spanish classes, Latin America was the logical choice. They set out with a goal and worked early mornings delivering newspapers in order to pay for their trip. They decided on Costa Rica for a destination with a small trip into Nicaragua. Six months and several (!!) thousand newspapers later, they embarked upon their journey. After three weeks of travel, their hearts were captured by the small market town of Masaya*, Nicaragua near the Vulcan Masaya. The beauty of the area, the richness of the culture, and the charm of a little market boy named, Luis all combined to make the trip an unforgettable experience.
... So, as you can see, Masaya Danes is mostly the continuation of a lifelong friendship.
